History[]
Background[]
Early history[]
Zanzibar has been inhabited by indigenous Africana peoples for centuries if not longer. Zanzibar was frequently visited by Muslim traders due to its proximity to the Indian Ocean, resulting in Tanzania having a high middle-eastern population both ethnically and culturally. In 1498, imperial explorer Vasco da Gama (c. 1460s-1524) came to Zanzibar representing the Portuguese empire. For years to come, the Portuguese Empire would invade and exploit Zanzibar though they were often met by revolts. The Portuguese Empire and sultanate would utilize Tanzania for the East-African slave-trade up until abolition in 1822.
British Empire[]
Zanzibar would be taken over by the British Empire who used it for spices and ivory. In 1890, it was deemed a protectorate rather than a colony though the empire retained control of the region. Between this time and 1913, Zanzibar was ruled over by sultans representing the British Empire. The result of Zanzibar residents wanting to be freed from the British Empire resulted in the Anglo-Zanzibar War of 1896 which was the shortest war in history, having been won by the British when their navy destroyed Beit al Hukum Palace. In 1913 the empire would go back to appointing governors of Zanzibar instead.
Zanzibar revolution[]
In the December of 1963, the British Empire ceased their protectorate over Zanzibar but denied Zanzibar its independence. A constitutional monarchy was appointed by the British with Sultan Jamshid bin Abdullah. However, the people of Zanzibar revolted and deposed of this sultan, replacing him with socialist leaders in the People's Republic of Zanzibar and Pemba. This government would join with the nation of Tanzania in the April of 1964.
