This article is about the fictional setting. For the themed land of the same name at the Disney Parks, see Adventureland.
- "Here is adventure. Here is romance. Here is mystery. Tropical rivers- silently flowing into the unknown. The unbelievable splendor of exotic flowers...the eerie sound of the jungle...with eyes that are always watching. This is Adventureland."
- —Walt Disney
The Wilds of Adventureland, also known more simply as Adventureland is the titular setting for the land of the same name in the Disney Parks.
Description[]
Adventureland refers to a variety of locations across the Earth which are connected by the mystical Rivers of Adventure. By the 1930s, these many connected locations were accumulatively referred to as, "Adventureland". The source of this supernatural element is unknown in addition to how it exactly functions. Adventureland was considered by adept magic users to be a place of mystery that even the greatest magics could not reveal the secrets of.
Adventureland is sometimes referenced as being part of, "The Magic Kingdom", itself apparently a magical domain composed of different points in time and space but its nature is unknown. Due to being a part of the Magic Kingdom, Adventureland was protected from larger threats via a magical item called, "The Crystal of the Magic Kingdom", kept by the wizard Merlin in the town of Marceline, Missouri.

History[]
Background[]
Pre-1800s[]
Early history[]
It is unknown how long, "Adventureland" has been active in its mystical state nor how it came to hold its paranormal traits. Prior to 65 BC, the Temple of the Forbidden Eye was constructed in what would become the Lost Delta. This temple was a tribute to the god Mara who would give their followers gifts of fortune, immortal youth or visions of the future however if they gazed into Mara's eyes, they'd be killed. Mara's source of power was a mysterious artifact known as the Jewel of Power located behind the Gates of Doom where blasphemers were killed. Around 65 BC, a massive flood hit the Lost Delta which made the temple lost to time.
There might have been some activity in Adventureland through the kingdom of Agrabah around the 10th-14th century. It is unknown if any of these events were actively connected to the space-bending nature of Adventureland's rivers, however. Around the twelfth century, multiple Adventureland locations were connected to the Khmer Empire's conqueror-king Jayavarman VII (1122–1218). Temples constructed in Cambodia and the Irrawaddy River included the king's likeness with Jayavarman VII having been historically known to often build these temples as tributes to buddhism.
There are also several Indigenous peoples of Adventureland's regions who are known to have had some presence outside of their associated locale but are again unknown if they used the Rivers of Adventure's word-wide transportation or not. Such Indigenous people would include the Umbala tribe of North Africa, a so-called, "Voodoo tribe" near the Canyon of the Gods, and the ancient South American Trader Sam. The, "Voodoo tribe" was active in a jungles of Adventureland by the 1730s at the latest though quite likely centuries earlier.[3] They protected the Temple of Immortality which contained the Emerald Trinity, three glowing emeralds which could grant immortality to whomever removed them from the jungle. The tribe came to disappear off the face of the earth with the location of the Temple being lost to time. The tribe remained in some way, seemingly undead to protect the emerald for centuries to come.
Golden Age of Piracy[]
The Caribbean island of Isla Tesoro was colonized by the Spanish Empire by 1643 when they constructed the fortress of Castillo del Morro in the town of Puerto Dorado. This fortress would hold the town's mysterious cursed treasure affiliated with one Marci Daviso and which seemed to include gold stolen by the murderous conquistador Hernán Cortés. The curse of the treasure appeared to be that whomever stole it would face a sudden and violent demise before being left as an undead skeleton.
Adventureland denizen Trader Sam was member of a potentially magical family of shrunken head salesmen, warriors and hunters. Sam himself was an adept magic-user and was born prior to the 18th century, having been an adult by around the 1720s. Sam would take up the family business of head trading though his true interests resided in mixology. This was the apparent result of having been bitten by a literal, "Bartending bug" which some confused for a mosquito.[4] Sam made his first ever brew near the Indian Elephant Bathing Pool which he accidentally dumped the liquor in, resulting in the pool becoming a hot-spot for elephants. During the golden age of piracy, Sam ran a pub somewhere in the Caribbean from which he did business with the likes of Captain Jack Sparrow, Blackbeard and Angelica Teach to name a few.
At some point in the Golden Age of Piracy, Isla Tesoro was visited by Captain Jack Sparrow in search for the cursed gold. Sparrow was followed by his rival Captain Hector Barbossa aboard The Wicked Wench which ransacked the island to steal the treasure. The Wench succeeded over Jack and burned Puerto Dorado to the ground before making it into a pirate-haven. The pirates of the Caribbean also made a secret lair within the island's subterranean Dead Man's Cove where they were killed by the cursed treasure.
The goddess of the sea Calypso did create seven magical treasures known as the, "Treasures of the Seven Seas" which were all hidden in locations throughout Adventureland. The Umbala were in possession of Calypso's Treasure of the Pacific which they often fought pirates for in the 18th century. At some point around the 1710s-1720s, Sparrow sought after Calypso's treasures with him and his crew successfully stealing at-least five and fighting the likes of Blackbeard, the East-India Trading Company, the Umbala tribe, the British Royal Navy and Captain Barbossa of The Wicked Wench to do so.
By the late 18th century, the island which would later be named New Switzerland was also used the harbour pirates. These pirates might have included the villainous Captain Jas. (James) Hook and his crew who docked along the beaches of the isle. Certain pirates stashed treasure, skeletons and resources in the isle's caverns. By the early 19th century, the island was mainly used by Chinese pirates such as the captain Kuala.
1800s[]
1800s-1880s[]
On the July 17 of 1805, the Robinson family of Switzerland was headed for New Guinea when a pirate-attack stranded them on the Adventureland isle of what would be named New Switzerland. The family made a treehouse and were dubbed governor of the isle by the Swiss government. The Robinsons also were acquainted with Trader Sam whom was considered by them to be a family friend.
Around 1862, a wealthy couple and their infant son were stranded in a region of the Congo which was part of Adventureland. The two proceeded to make a treehouse in a Disneyoendron tree before being killed by the leopard Sabor. The infant was adopted by a troop of gorillas and given the name of, "Tarzan". In 1882, Tarzan met with a gorilla-studying expedition lead by Professor Archimedes Q. Porter and his daughter Jane. The professor and his daughter chose to stay with Tarzan in his treehouse while Tarzan also became king of the apes.
1890s-1900[]
The Rivers of Adventures were first mapped in the summer of 1891 by adventurer Dr. Albert Falls on a 13 day journey. On this journey, Falls travelled through the Irrawaddy river, Ganges river, Congo river, the Nile, the Zambezi river and the Amazon river. While on the Irrawaddy, he found a series of flooded ruins and the long-lost Temple of the Forbidden Eye which he pended university approval to excavate with no success. On the fourth day, he documented a secret Indian elephant bathing pool and from the 8th-10th days he documented the region around the African veldt.
On the seventh day of his journey, Falls mapped Schweitzer Falls which he named for himself. Using the Rivers of Adventure, Falls made passage for the Amazon rainforest. While in the Amazon, he documented petroglyphs of piranhas and took part in fishing for the creatures at the end of the seasonal rapids on the 13th day of his journey. After this, Falls returned to the Lost Delta with his many findings which he shared with the Society of Explorers and Adventurers, a guild of colonial colonists and aristocrats of-which he was a member.
On the August 12 of 1891, Senior Society of Explorers and Adventurers member and photographer Luana Teixeira made his most famous discovery in the form of Schweitzer Falls official. Schweitzer Falls would be deemed, "The 8th wonder of the world", largely due to it holding, "The Backside of Water". The falls were however part of the territory of the Umbala tribe who took to the practice of headhunting to ward off the colonists who claimed Schweitzer Falls. At some point, Dr. Falls made an estate for himself and his wife Victoria Marie Falls along the Rivers of Adventure. This estate would also secretly hold a meeting-place for the Society of Explorers and Adventurers.
At some point in time, the Society of Explorers and Adventurers also established a base in the pavilion of the Enchanted Tiki Room. The oldest dated of these expeditions was Camellia Falco's 1831 mission on the Zambezi river. One member of the Tiki Room in particular was named Rosita, a white cockatoo who around 1880 was imprisoned by S.E.A. member Barnabas T. Bullion to be used as a mine-canary at his operation mining the stolen land of Big Thunder Mountain. S.E.A. member Dr. Albert Falls would also decorate his jungle mansion with a chandelier modelled after the birds José, Pierre, Michael and Fritz.
1900s[]
1910s[]
On the April 8th of 1911, Dr. Falls founded the Jungle Navigation Company to transport cargo and passengers throughout the world's jungles. The boathouse from which Falls launched his 13-day expedition became the Jungle Navigation Company's original headquarters. While Dr. Albert officially ran the JNC, it was often headed by Victoria while Albert was off adventuring. The Jungle Navigation Company also employed a large number of, "Skippers" who would make Adventureland their home.
New routes along the Rivers of Adventureland were recorded following 1916 by one Frank Wolff, a member of the Jungle Navigation Company's outpost in the Amazon colony of Porto Velho. Frank was formerly captain of the boat La Quila and secretly an immortal conquistador, cursed to remain in the Amazon for the crimes of his leader Lope de Aguirre by the Puka Michuna tribe of the Amazon though he was freed in 1916. Wolff mapped a yet undocumented route along the rivers which seemingly took him from the Amazon rainforest, to the Congo Basin, through the Nile river in North Africa (either in Egypt or Sudan) passed the African Veldt, Chimp Country and the backside of Schweitzer Falls, to the Mekong river through a flooded Cambodian shrine and secret bathing pool used by Indian elephants, then back again to the Amazon.
Frank documented this route on a map for the Jungle Navigation Company. Frank later gifted this map to Dr. Albert Falls with the words, " To Albert, Here's to many more adventures of a life-time- F.W." and, "Here is adventure, here is romance, here is mystery". This map would be passed through the Falls family and modified over the years to unknown extents for company usage.
The Jungle Navigation Company's colonial affairs brought many businesses to Adventureland such as the Adventureland Chamber of Commerce by 1928.[5] Due to this, the Enchanted Tiki Room would become a form of musical-revue show, connected to an entertainment magazine known as The Bird Call and a dining-service called Tahitian Terrace.[6] Trader Sam was also highly involved within the business operations of Adventureland, running a shop called Tropical Imports and trading alongside his cousin Chief Nah-mee. Newspapers such as the Daily Colonial Journal and (possibly) later The Daily Gnus were also created for spreading news throughout the regions of Adventureland. Similarly was the radio-broadcast the Global Broadcasting Service run by JNC employee Nigel Greenwater.
At some point after 1911, a white colonial safari went missing in the African veldt. This expedition became known as the, "Lost Safari" and would remain missing until at-least the year 1936. Apparently this safari remained lost longer than any other frequently spotted safari in human history, most frequently being seen terrorized by a black rhinoceros. One of the parties which sought after the lost safari was lead by river-boatsman Charlie Allnut and his wife Rose Sayer aboard the JNC boat Zambezi Miss.
Early 1930s[]
Dr. Albert Falls disappeared in 1928, leaving his granddaughter Alberta Falls to run the Jungle Navigation Company. downfall, on the October 1 of 1931 she held the first ever, "Jungle Cruise", a scenic riverboat tour service. The success of the Jungle Cruise brought new business to the several outposts maintained by the Jungle Navigation Company across the globe. Also in 1931, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Jungle Navigation Company, Alberta assembled a complete map detailing the, "Jungle Rivers of Adventureland".
In the December of 1932, evil S.E.A. member Professor Garrett Reed travelled to the jungles of Adventureland in search for the Temple of Immortality in a quest for eternal life. On the night of December 8, 1932, Reed found the temple and its magical crystals only to be killed by the jungle for his theft. A skipper for the Jungle Navigation Company followed Reed's trail to the temple while performing a, "Jungle Cruise" tour and secretly stole the remaining emerald. The jungle subsequently turned on the skipper too, with them narrowly escaping murderous plants, the resurrected tribe, and zombies emerging from the water. Eventually the boat entered the Canyon of the Gods where the canyon's deities reclaimed the stolen jewel. The gods attempted to kill those aboard the boat only for the boat to escape to the JNC boathouse.
Mid 1930s[]
Around the mid 1930s, the Jungle Navigation Company and Trader Sam collaborated to create, "Trader Sam's Enchanted Tiki Bar" in the Polynesian isles. This bar was seemingly enchanted by the same tiki gods which served as patron over the Enchanted Tiki Room. Fellow bar-owner Marion Ravenwood and several members of S.E.A.'s splinter-faction the Adventurers Club sent Sam gifts to commemorate the bar's opening. Sam also would adopt a pet in the form of a baby Indian Elephant which he named, "Ellie".
In 1935, Indiana Jones and Sallah discovered the Temple of the Forbidden Eye and collaborated with British Colonial Affairs and the Jungle Navigation Company to excavate the ruins via the, "Lost Delta Archaeological Expedition". Also in 1935, Jones' rival archaeologist René Belloq learned of the excavation by manipulating Jones' contact Prof. Kauffman at the Universitatis Sigillium. When news broke of the temple's discovery, it became a global phenomena as travellers flocked to the Lost Delta seeking Mara's gifts.
In the December of 1935, the Jungle Navigation Company held their first inaugural, "Jingle Cruise", a Christmas-themed tour of the Rivers of Adventure. Their boat the Ganges Gertie had particular significance during this event, having been renamed to the, "Garland Gertie" for the event. The Jingle Cruise practice of continuing the Jingle Cruise would continue for the following years, being an event promoted by flyers and The Daily Gnus newspaper.
During one of these tours (potentially even the inaugural Jingle Cruise), an air shipment of holiday decoration missed its marker and was dumped in the rivers. Because of this, the jungles became polluted with Holiday decor that the Jungle Navigation Company condoned as an improvised decoration (despite the harm it caused to the local wildlife). Holiday themed pollution would appear to become a standard tradition of the Jungle Navigation Company's Jingle Cruise celebrations. Trader Sam and Chief Nah-mee would make a business of these tours. Sam would sell commodities such as champagne to boat-riders for the coming New Year's Eve while Nah-mee assumed a Santa costume and the identity of, "Trader Sam-ta" to trade shrunken-heads as Christmas presents. JNC member Nigel Greenwater would make special Christmas broadcasts on his radio company The Global Broadcasting Service as a tie-in for the Jingle Cruise.
1936[]
To earn additional revenue, Sallah established the company, "Sallah Tours" which lead tourists through the temple. Sallah also contacted Jones' friend and frequent affiliate Trader Sam to bring patrons of his bar to the temple. Jones objected to the high number of tourists travelling to the temple for Mara's gifts, however British Colonial Affairs forced the expedition to continue this business for proift. On the July 6 of 1936, Indiana Jones disappeared in the temple while seeking after the Jewel of Power past the Gates of Doom.
In Jones' absence, Sallah amplified the number of tours brought in as a means of getting more eyes in the temple to find Jones. One of these tours happened upon Jones after gazing into the eyes of Mara and being doomed to be dragged past the Gates of Doom. Indiana Jones forced the gates of doom shut, saving the guests. The guests then navigated the temple in their jeep while pursued by Mara's forces. Ultimately, Jones and the guests were able to escape the temple with their lives.
Around 1936, Adventureland was visited by an organization known as the Adventure Trading Company. This company traded in, "Jujus" representing different adventuring jujus, each of which had its own ties to Adventureland and its inhabitants. The company had travelled to Adventureland following stops in the East-African Port of Harambe, Peru's Lost River Delta and the S.E.A. colony of Mystic Point in Papua New Guinea. However, JNC skipper and past Piranhahaha recipricantt Skip Dockmonkey lost this cargo shipment resulting in him getting fired from the company. This lost shipment became front-page news of The Daily Gnus newspaper as reported on by journalist Carla Quest.
The shipment was eventually tracked down by a group of adventurers wishing to obtain the elephant jujus. Skip too got his job back from a group of adventurers who wished to earn Piranhahaha Jujus from him. A similar (if not the same) group assisted the Lost Delta Archaeological Expedition decipher maraglyphs at the Temple of the Forbidden Eye, uncover the petroglyphs at Tarzan's treehouse, tell stories at an oasis in the kingdom of Agrabah, recruit new talent for the Enchanted Tiki Room's musical revue, assist employees of Trader Sam's Polynesian bar in finding the lost recipe for Sam's, "Juju Juice", take shots of the venomous, "Venomade" at Bengal Barbecue, explore an old cursed pirate's lair on Jackson Island in Missouri, and take oaths to be ambassadors of Adventureland.
1937-1938[]
In 1937, the Adventureland Chamber of Commerce declared Alberta Falls the, "Businesswoman of the Year". In 1938, Alberta transformed the company headquarters into the Jungle Navigation Co. Ltd. Skipper Canteen, a dining-service which would host the likes of the eccentric professor the Dreamfinder, aviator Jock Lindsey, "witch-doctor" Colonel Nedley Lostmore, radio-announcer Nigel Greenwater, and one Pamelia Perkins, president of the Adventurers Club. Around this time, Alberta arranged to make Trader Sam the head of the Jungle Navigation Company's lost & found. Sam however transformed this into, "Trader Sam's Gift Shop!" where he sold the recovered items.
Also in 1938, Alberta arranged for a Jungle Cruise tour lead by one Felix Pechman XIII which would transport V.I.P. guests Dr. Leonard Moss, Rosa Soto Dominguez, Dr. Kon Chunosuke and Siobhan Murphy. This tour turned to disaster with the guests being stranded along the African veldt along the Nile river after their ship the Kwango Kate was sunk in the hippo pool. The wreck's survivors would be chased up a tree by an angered black rhinoceros and encountered by several skippers before returning to society through unknown means.
At some point during or following 1938, Indiana Jones travelled again to Adventureland. While on his adventures he misplaced several artifacts along the Rivers of Adventure. This including the headdress of his old foe Mola Ram which was obtained by the Umbala tribe, his father's umbrella left in the African Veldt, and a top-secret crate from the U.S. government that he obtained under unknown circumstances containing the Ark of the Covenant, a crate which was lost in the Congo basin and obtained by a silverback gorilla named Kejo. Possibly related to this, Trader Sam obtained a stone tablet depicting the Crystal Skull of Akator.[7]
Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom[]
At some point in time, the Greek God of the Underworld, Hades travelled to Adventureland in his plans to conquer the Magic Kingdom. Hades sought after the shattered portions of the, "Crystal of the Magic Kingdom" which he competed with the wizard Merlin to obtain. Hades and Merlin's adventures seemingly involved entities from across Adventureland history.
Outside of Agrabah, Hades obtained the lamp of Jafar and Iago from the Cave of Wonders which he used to make three wished: #1 Take over the land, #2 Find the missing crystal piece, and #3 Capture Merlin. Jafar seemingly recruited various pirates of the Caribbean but seemingly struggled to perform these tasks due to Merlin's magic, all while plotting with Iago to break free. Meanwhile, Merlin had his apprentices team up with the Genie of the Lamp while hiding from Iago and the pirates. Jafar and Iago were trapped back in the lamp within the Cave of Wonders by Merlin, the Genie and Merlin's apprentices.
Hades wen't on the resurrect the evil lion king Scar for his plans with Scar planning to destroy Adventureland in an elephant rampage. Merlin went into hiding as a skipper piloting a jungle river boat and had his apprentices team up with the mandrill Rafiki. After Scar's plans were foiled by Merlin and his apprentices, Hades turned Scar into an undead spirit, which was then blown away by Merlin's apprentices.
Hades would also assume the alias of the Underworld god Lazuli to recruit ancient Incan machiavellian/mad-scientist Yzma and her henchman Kronk, promising to make her, "Empress of Adventureland". Yzma plotted to turn the residents of Adventureland into llamas using transformation potions. From the Enchanted Tiki Room, Merlin had his apprentices team up with Incan Emperor Kuzco. Yzma used magic-draining potions to attack Merlin and his apprentices, only for the apprentices to douse her in a potion that turned her into a living turtleneck sweater.
1940s-1990s[]
By the 1950s, the manager of Trader Sam's Enchanted Tiki Bar from the JNC was one Skip Dockmonkey. During the Holiday seasons, Sam put the bars through Christmas themed overlays coinciding with paranormal, "Tropical Snowstorms" which engulfed the island region with a blizzard from the nearby volcano (possibly Krakatoa). Around the year 1960, Trader Sam, Skip, and Sam's cousin Chief Nah-mee opened a sister-location to the Enchanted Tiki Bar. This was built in an, "East Coast" Polynesian village along the Seven Seas Lagoon, likely outside of the Wilds of Adventureland.
According to resident masters-of-ceremony José and Fritz, the Tiki Room would establish a routine in 1963 that went unchanged for decades. By this time, the Tiki Room and/or its surrounding residents would also develop a relationship with the Florida produce-service of the Sunshine Tree Terrace brand of the Bay Lake Produce Companyand WED Enterprises, Inc.. The brand's mascot the Florida Orange Bird would spend time within the Tiki Room's vicinity because of this.
At some point around the 1990s (implied to be after the June of 1994), the Tiki Room was purchased by Hollywood executives and sold by the agent birds William and Morris to the birds Iago and Zazu. Iago was a devious parrot which was formerly the henchman to the ancient Arabian sorcerer-turned-genie Jafar, while Zazu had served as majordomo of the African Pride Lands under the lions of Pride Rock. Iago intended on transforming the Tiki Room into a revue centred around himself, only to anger the goddess of disaster, Uh-Oa. Uh-Oa maimed Iago as punishment and it is likely that following this, the two birds revoked or reduced their management of the Tiki Room.
2000s[]
By the 2000s, the position of masters-of-ceremony changed to the parrots Hanoli, Manu, Mahina, and Waha Nui. Around 2002 or later, the Tiki Room was visited by the alien Experiment-626 AKA Stitch after he crashed there in a spaceship. Stitch's human caretaker Lilo Pelekai travelled to the Tiki Gardens in-order to try and find Stitch. The birds of the Tiki Room went on to misidentify Stitch as a tiki god called, "The Big Kahuna" and let him lead the Tiki Room's musical revue. After breaking the Tiki Room's fountain, Stitch and the birds came to an agreement where Stitch could lead one more musical number if he left the Tiki Room in peace.
Development history[]
Adventureland was originally conceived as the, "True-Life Adventureland", inspired by the popular True-Life Adventures film-series made by Disney. The, "Land" was made to depict a romanticized jungle region and as a result features glamorization of colonialism, stereotyping, and exoticism. Adventureland was always planned hand-in-hand with the attraction which would become the Jungle Cruise. A plaque for Adventureland reads, "Here is adventure. Here is romance. Here is mystery. Tropical rivers- silently flowing into the unknown. The unbelievable splendor of exotic flowers...the eerie sound of the jungle...with eyes that are always watching. This is Adventureland. -Walt Disney".
For most of Adventureland's history, it was presented as a more immersive setting which was anachronistic and not legitimately intended to be a single location but rather a back-drop for several settings. It received some story in the 1990s with the opening of Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Forbidden Eye in Disneyland which coincided with the backstory The Skipper Survival Guide. Here, Adventureland would receive theming as the, "Lost Delta" with a tone and backstory comparable to that of the Indiana Jones films.
This changed in the 2010s-2020s when the focus for Adventureland shifted to an emphasis on camp humour and convoluted backstories. By a 2021 refurbishment of the Jungle Cruise, it became apparent that the Skipper Survival Guide had been retconned and that Adventureland was now being presented as a single setting, made up of several different locations.
Appearances[]
While there are many Adventureland attractions, only the following reference Adventureland the entity/location.
Adventureland Bazaar[]
This middle-eastern bazaar is named for the realm of Adventureland.
Adventure Trading Company[]
In the Adventure Trading Company, the Daily Gnus often refers to Adventureland as a single location. A map of Adventureland was also handed out showing locations from in the Lost Delta, Africa, Polynesia and Agrabah. Additionally, this attraction ret-conned Trader Sam's Enchanted Tiki Bar into being part of Adventureland, despite it being located within the Disneyland Hotel.
Disney Explorers Lodge[]
This resort is themed to being a lodge for explorers from across the world. Passports left behind by Mickey and Minnie Mouse have travel stamps from Adventureland along with Mystic Point, the Explorers Lodge's Squirt Gardens, Hong Kong, and the Society of Explorers and Adventurers.[8]
Disneyland Railroad[]
After departing from Main Street, the Disneyland Railroad passes through, "The Wilds of Adventureland" before getting to New Orleans Square. On the subject of the realm, the train conductor states, "You just might run into a lot of savage critters out there, includin’ lions, and tigers, and tiki birds! Everybody best be on the lookout—ya never know just what may show up" before the trains encounter a black panther.[9]
Walt Disney World Railroad[]
This version of the railroad enters Adventureland where it is identified as the, "Heart of Adventureland".
Western River Railroad[]
This version of the railroad begins in the wilds of Adventureland and shares a depot with Jungle Cruise: Wildlife Expeditions.
Jungle Cruise[]
The Jungle Cruise takes guests on riverboat tours of Adventureland's many Rivers of Adventure, passing through a variety of countries and continents in the process. The docks of the Jungle Cruise have a sign reading, "Adventureland" on them and are referred to as the Docks of Adventureland. There are also annotated maps by Dr. Albert Falls of the "Jungle Rivers of Adventureland", assembled by Alberta Falls. Several packages within the boathouse are also addressed to the, "Outskirts of Adventureland". Outside of Trader Sam's Gift Shop! is a crate from Chief Nah-mee, identifying Nah-mee's address as being in Adventureland.
Skipper Canteen[]
The Skipper Canteen has certificates from the, "Adventureland Chamber of Commerce". There is also a letter addressed to Rosita in the "Enchanted Tiki Room, Adventureland" from the Lost River Delta. The library also contains allusions to the Magic Kingdom of which Adventureland is often referenced as a feature. This includes the books A History of Magical Kingdoms by Mangum and The Mystery Castle by Cindy Ella (the latter of which references the Magic Kingdom's central feature of Cinderella Castle).
Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom[]
There were three missions revolving around Adventureland in this attraction. Guests played as apprentices for the wizard Merlin who needed to collect the shards of the, "Crystal of the Magic Kingdom" which was being sought after by the evil god Hades. Three shards of the crystal were located in Adventureland with Hades resurrecting Scar, employing Yzma under the guise of Lazuli with promises to make her Empress of Adventureland, and releasing Jafar from his lamp in the Cave of Wonders to retrieve them for him.
Guests meet Merlin for their missions aboard a Jungle Cruise boat, in the Enchanted Tiki Room and on Isla Tesoro. Here, they joined forces with Rafiki, Emperor Kuzco and the Genie of the Lamp respectively. Together, they defeated the villains and retrieved the pieces of the crystal from Hades. At the end of the attraction, the crystal was restored and Hades trapped within it in the fire house of Main Street, U.S.A.. It is possible that this attraction not only included augmented space but also time-travel given how Merlin is a known time-traveler and Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom featured settings and characters from many eras.
Walt Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room[]
Clyde and Claude tell a story about their adventures in Adventureland, leading to them finding the Sunshine Pavilion and Enchanted Tiki Room.
Other connections[]
Jungle Cruise (film)[]
Film character Frank Wolff of the Jungle Navigation Company mapped the Rivers of Adventureland at some point after the events of the film. This map was given to Dr. Albert Falls and used in the Amazon River Base along with the Mekong Maiden during its disappearance. Frank Wolff's hat can also be found in Alberta's office in the the Amazon River Base while more clothes of his can be found in her office at the Lost Delta boathouse, next to the clothes of Lily Houghton. Both of these boathouses also contain their framed map to Lágrimas de Cristal and the conquistador helm of Lope de Aguirre.
Adventureland native Rosita was previously the pet of Porto Velho business tycoon Nilo Nemolato during the 1910s where they were enemies with Frank Wolff. Also, Dr. Albert Falls went on an expedition to find the Tears of the Moon for the Royal Anthropological and Diverse Adventures Society where he recovered the arrowhead of Lukarina. This expedition is seemingly alluded to in the Amazon River Base where there is a crate for the, "A. Falls Botanical Expedition" in Alberta Falls' office.
Trivia[]
- Adventureland is amongst the classic Disney, "Lands" of Disneyland and the Magic Kingdom to incorporate an explanation for its setting.
- Tomorrowland, New Orleans Square, Toon Town, Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge and Main Street, U.S.A. are all generally single cohesive settings.
- Fantasyland, Liberty Square and Frontierland are all anachronistic locales with shifting settings though without an in-universe explanation such as Adventureland does.
- As the Amazon River Base and Lost Delta are both referenced as being administrated by a, "Governor General" alongside other colonial British political positions, it is possible all of Adventureland was ruled over by a Governor General of the British Empire.
- While the Disney Parks are filled with instances of anachronism and sudden location change, there are few examples of in-world occurrences such as with Tomorrowland:
- In Pirates of the Caribbean, guests are magically transported from from the Blue Bayou of New Orleans to Isla Tesoro by the magic of the undead Captain X.
- In Avengers Campus, the Sanctum transports guests from Orange, California to New York City. It is explained that an ancient race of sorcerers known as the Vishanti created sanctums that result in temporal anomalies. These anomalies were studied by S.H.I.E.L.D. in the 1950s-onwards and later contained by the Sorcerers Supreme.[10]
- The 2021 refurbishment portraying Adventureland as devoid of Indigenous settlements is a piece of colonial propaganda known as, Terra Nullius.
