Vulcania or Vulcania Island is a location from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954), inspired by Lincoln Island from Jules Verne's The Mysterious Island (1875).

Description[]

Vulcania is a volcanic island located along the Plain of Prospero to its North-West, Crown of Caliban to its North, Aronnax Abyssal to its East, and Belt of Neptune to its South through South-West. Along the South-Eastern coast of Vulcania were various smaller islands and rock-formations known as, "The Serpents Teeth".[1] Vulcania became equipped with advanced technology in the 19th century by mysterious inventor, "Captain Nemo" who used the island as a harbour for his submarine, The Nautilus.

Features[]

  • The Caldera: This caldera served as Vulcania's hub and a harbour for the Nautilus.
  • Mount Prometheus: Mount Prometheus is a large volcano located along the Northern Coast of Vulcania, and along its Caldera. The mountain served as headquarters for Captain Nemo. Captain Nemo equipped the mountain with his, "Terravator" inventions to journey deep underground it where there are vast ecosystems.
  • The Serpents Teeth: These were a series of island located across the South-Eastern coast of the isle.

History[]

Background[]

Origins[]

Vulcania was initially populated by escaped prisoners of British penal-colony Rura Penthe, lead by mysterious inventor, "Captain Nemo". Nemo created a nuclear-powered submarine called, "The Nautilus" which docked in Vulcania and which he along with his crew used to live apart from imperialist society, destroying British ships whenever encountered.

At some point, Nemo created a fleet of smaller Nautiluses known as, The Nautilus XIII which he used to depart from Vulcania to under the Polar Ice Caps where he may have found ruins of Atlantis along with a sea-serpent and mermaids. Nemo wrote a book on this expedition known as, "The Polar Voyage". In 1869, the island was eventually discovered by outsider Ned Land leading to the Nautilus being damaged by British ships and sinking into the ocean, presumably killing Nemo.

The Mysterious Island[]

Through unknown means, Nemo survived the Nautilus' sinking. Throughout 1970 to 1872, Captain Nemo invented, "Terravators" and subterranean vehicles to explore and document the subterranean ecosystems deep below Vulcania. In 1873, Nemo re-mapped the island of Vulcania. Nemo also designed a new line of smaller victorian submarines known as the sub 157 "Neptune". These submarines were used to explore the waters around the island such as the ship's graveyard of, "Kraken Reef" and what appeared to be Atlantean ruins inhabited by inhuman, aquatic humanoids with glowing crystals.

At some point in time the island was visited by Ned Land's friend, "Trader Sam" who travelled the world to study mixology.

Jungle Cruise appearances[]

Skipper Society[]

A map on the wall shows the Nautilus in the waters of "Submarine Lagoon".

Trader Sam's Grog Grotto[]

Skip Dockmonkey's menu introductions to the bar mention that Trader Sam studied mixology in Vulcania. There is a portrait hung up in the bar, depicting the Nautilus in the submarine lagoon of Vulcania which glows when the, "Nautilus" drink is ordered.

Other connections[]

Skipper Canteen[]

Within the Skipper Canteen is a map of, "Legendary Beasts of the Mediterranean" by Captain Mary Oceaneer which depicts the Nautilus being attacked by the Giant Squid. In the library of the Skipper Canteen is a book titled The Polar Voyage by Captain Nemo. The name of this book alludes to the defunct Fantasyland attraction 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Submarine Voyage where the Nautilus found Atlantean ruins under the North Pole in a voyage tributing the passage of the USS Nautilus.

Trader Sam's Enchanted Tiki Bar[]

Trader Sam owns a copy of Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and a photograph of Ned Land along with a harpoon gifted to Sam by Land with a message saying, "Sam, This comes with a whale of a tale! -Ned".
