Vingt mille lieues sous les mers or Vingt mille lieues sous les mers: Tour du monde sous-marin (French: Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas or Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas: A World Tour Underwater) is a science-fiction/adventure novel by French author Jules Verne which was published from 1869 to 1870. It was notably adapted into a 1954 live-action Disney film titled 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

This film was subject to many Disney Parks attractions including Fantasyland's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Submarine Voyage (inspired by Tomorrowland's Submarine Voyage), Les Mystères du Nautilus in Disneyland Paris' Discoveryland, and Tokyo DisneySea's Discovery Island. While none of these were Adventureland attractions nor incarnations of the Jungle Cruise, it shares development-history with the Jungle Cruise along with several references within the Jungle Cruise property.

Summary[]

Jungle Cruise connections[]

Jungle Cruise[]

The Disney adaptation of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was art-designed by Harper Goff, sculpture Chris Mueller and had groundbreaking special-effects supervised by Bob Mattey. Both of these individuals were influential imagineers in the development of the Jungle Cruise. Incidentally, animator Marc Davis also designed scenes for the Magic Kingdom attraction 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Submarine Voyage.

An unused concept for the attraction would have had the Giant Squid from the film appear in Disneyland's Jungle Cruise.[1] In Walt Disney World's Jungle Cruise is a piece of luggage from Castaway Cay, a real-life resort which features a sunken Nautilus XIII.

Skipper Canteen[]

Within the library of the skipper canteen is a book by Captain Nemo titled, The Polar Voyage. This book is an allusion to how the attraction 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Submarine Voyage featured scenes underneath of the North Pole, itself inspired by the real-world USS Nautilus' departure for the North Pole in 1958. Also in the library is a book titled 800 Leagues on the Amazon by "Verne".[2]

Within the meeting-hall for the Society of Explorers and Adventurers is map by Captain Mary Oceaneer. On this map is an illustration of the Nautilus being sunken by the Giant Squid from the film. The hall also contains a map by Jason Chandler, a character who would have been part of an unbuilt Nautilus themed restaurant in Disneyland.

Trader Sam's[]

Both of these bars contain elements from Disney's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Both have drinks called, "The Nautilus" which are served in mugs made to resemble the submarine. When ordered, this triggers effects such as audio of the captain of Submarine Voyage's voice, commanding the Nautilus XIII from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Submarine Voyage.

Trader Sam's Enchanted Tiki Bar[]

In Trader Sam's possession is a copy of Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. There is also a photograph of Ned Land along with a harpoon gifted to Sam by Land with a message saying, "Sam, This comes with a whale of a tale! -Ned".[3]

Trader Sam's Grog Grotto[]

The menu description for the Nautilus drink mentions how the submarine used to frequent the waters of the Polynesian Village. On the wall, is the taxidermy arm of the Giant Squid which will come to life to assist in pouring drinks while a diver's helmet (from the attraction) has water bubble within. Nearby this arm is a photograph of Walt Disney holding the same arm in-front of a wall of fish photographs. Ned Land's makeshift guitar is also located on one of the shelves.[4] Also on the wall is a portrait of the Nautilus XIII in the Submarine Lagoon of Vulcania and the description of the bars by Skip Dockmonkey mentions Sam having travelled to Vulcania to study new drink recipes.

Tropical Hideaway[]

Within this restaurant is an oar belonging to Jason Chandler, a character from an unbuilt Nautilus restaurant proposed for Disneyland.
