The Daily Gnus is a fictitious newspaper originating from the Adventure Trading Company.
Description[]
The Daily Gnus is a colonial newspaper distributed in Adventureland, a mystical hybrid of locations across the world connected by the Rivers of Adventure. The Daily Gnus was active in the 1930s and had services including: food reviews, community postings, advertisements for local colonial businesses, an entertainment spotlight, the sports desk which reported on sports, and, "Dateline Adventureland" which had more intensive stories and interviews. The newspaper took its name from the gnus resident to Adventureland's African veldt and featured illustrations of the animals under its title. Once a year, they held The Daily Gnus Annual Children’s Coloring Contest.

Dateline Adventureland: Adventure Trading Company Opening Soon at Disneyland Park[]
by Talahassee Glover
Hello adventurers, Tallahassee Glover here with the first of a series of dispatches from deep in the jungles of Adventureland at Disneyland park. The birds who sing words tell us that a new merchant is opening soon for a limited engagement beginning August 1. Adventure Trading Company will be a provisions and publications company with a knack for selling goods that send the buyers on wild adventures. At the end of these adventures are Adventureland relics known as Juju. These unique artifacts reflect the ancient traditions and importance of storytelling in Adventureland. Collect Juju! Collect adventures! Collect stories![6]
Dateline Adventureland: Adventure Trading Company Now Open at Disneyland Park[]
by Talahassee Glover
Tallahassee Glover here, back with another dispatch from Adventureland at Disneyland park. We have been receiving reports that the Adventure Trading Company has been spotted in Adventureland, bringing with them a variety of provisions and publications from around the area.
Explorers in Adventureland can now visit the Indiana Jones Outpost, where the Adventure Trading Company has set up temporary shop. In addition to the necessary whips and fedoras, this will also be the place to purchase maps, newspapers and other publications that will send you on an Juju-seeking adventure. Word is that the Adventure Trading Company has come across some additional Juju that will be for sale at the location. But beware, adventurers … these mystical Juju are in short supply.
Juju, as we told you in a previous report, are small traditional relics indigenous to the Adventureland culture. Each Juju represents a trait important to an adventurous lifestyle. Word on the dock is that the Jungle Cruise skippers will be brushing off their own personal Juju to wear in celebration of the Adventure Trading Company’s limited stay. They’re not the only ones getting into the spirit! The local archeologists, bird handlers and merchants are also planning to sport their Juju.
Between you and me, I’ve also spotted some new recipe shipments arriving for Tropical Imports, Bengal Barbecue and Trader Sam’s Enchanted Tiki Bar … I think I’ll need to dig further into this.
Dateline Adventureland: Hunting for Laughs with Skip and Birdwatching with Tiki Kiki[]
by Talahassee Glover
Kungaloosh, adventurers! Tallahassee Glover, back again. Some of you intrepid explorers have already discovered the wonders of Adventure Trading Company, now open at Disneyland park. We’ve met quite a few brave souls over the past few days, and I’ve just emerged from the jungles of Adventureland with these exclusive interviews with two of them: Skip and Tiki Kiki.
“It wasn’t my fault,” Skip insists when asked about the infamous incident on the Jungle Cruise dock, “but it is a funny story. I regret nothing … sometimes you have to pay the price for a really funny story.” And losing his Jungle Cruise Skipper license seems to be a price he was willing to pay. Now Skip roams the edges of the river looking for more hilarity to distract him from his lack of employment.
“They’re offering a crash course – get it? – for new Jungle Cruise Skippers …” [Here is where we lost him in a fit of laughter. Seems Skip is pretty good at cracking himself up.] “… I’m going to pass it this time, get my Piranhahaha Juju and my job back!” Best of luck to you, Skip. Those looking to become Jungle Cruise Skippers can inquire at Adventure Trading Company, where they will can pick up The Jungle Handbook for River Navigation.
Anyone who is anyone in the Adventureland entertainment business knows Rita Serbano, especially after her big interview in The Bird Call (now available at Adventure Trading Company). But it’s her sister, Tiki Kiki, who is working hard to make a name for herself and rise out of her sister’s shadow.
“It takes a real eye for talent, you know,” she told me. “Not just any bird can make it in the Enchanted Tiki Room. You have to be more than a pretty face – or beak.” When asked about her sister’s interview, Tiki Kiki was evasive. “Weren’t we talking about me?” she demanded. We at Dateline Adventureland wish her much success … and recognition.
Which of your fellow Adventureland explorers have you met in your expeditions? Tell us your stories in the comments!
Dateline Adventureland: Tasty Treats and Tonics Part of the Adventure at Disneyland Park[]
by Talahassee Glover
Greetings, adventurers! Local Adventureland businesses are getting into the fun with Adventure Trading Company at Disneyland park, offering treats created for visiting traders. And these delicious delights even come with adventures of their own.
Traders collecting artifacts known as Juju may want to indulge with these delectable delights. My favorite is the Pineapple This-Side-Up Parfait, a mix of fresh and crushed pineapple layered with pineapple yogurt mousse and pound cake with a cherry on top.
But this parfait is more than a tasty treat … it’s the start of a very important ritual. Everybody knows that the pineapple is a symbol of goodwill and hospitality; therefore, those who eat this treat will become Goodwill Ambassadors of Adventureland. When you receive your Pineapple Juju, you also receive a pair of cards to help you spread the goodwill of Adventureland among other guests. The cards hold a sticker that recognizes the wearer for possessing certain adventurer traits. The cards I received recognized The Adventurous Spirit of Friendship, which I gave to my fellow explorer, Tiki Tiki Tiki Tiki Tiki Tyler, who purchased the Pineapple This-Side-Up Parfait for me to enjoy.
There’s also Venomade at Bengal Barbecue, a cool concoction of snake venom and snake eggs. The venom has a real bite, and there’s nothing tastier than when a snake egg pops in your mouth! Anybody brave enough to finish the cup will receive the Snake Juju, a true sign of courage.
The last Juju isn’t available in Disneyland park, but at Trader Sam’s Enchanted Tiki Bar at the Disneyland Hotel. Unfortunately, the skippers at the bar have lost the recipe for Trader Sam’s JujuJuice! Pick up your free telegram in Adventureland and find the ingredients. You won’t be able to order the drink and acquire the Tiki Mask Juju without it.
I’d also like to remind you that supplies are limited for each item, so make like a rhino and charge on over to Adventureland soon!
Dateline Adventureland: Final Shipments Arrive at Adventure Trading Company at Disneyland Park[]
by Talahassee Glover
Attention adventurers! From the very beginning of the Adventure Trading Company’s limited engagement at Disneyland park, we’ve known that supplies have been limited. But today I have received an important dispatch from the jungle: the last shipments have arrived!
If you haven’t ventured into Indiana Jones Outpost to begin your expeditions, now is the time. Remember, supplies are extremely limited … if you’re planning to hunt for a specific Juju, please be prepared to change course. But I’ve hunted for them all, adventurers – and each holds its own unique power!
Dateline Adventureland: Adventure Trading Company Bids Farewell to Disneyland Park[]
by Talahassee Glover
Well, adventurers, the end of Adventure Trading Company’s limited-time engagement at Disneyland park has come. Reports indicate that the expedition outfitter ran out of supplies yesterday, and they are now in the process of packing up for the journey out of the jungle. But word in the trees is that Adventure Trading Company has one more surprise in store as it bids farewell to the brave, funny, friendly and cunning explorers of Adventureland.
On Friday, Aug. 29 – their last day in Adventureland – Adventure Trading Company will be collecting the stories of the local Juju Traders with story packets, available for sale at Indiana Jones Outpost. Inside each story packet is a Story Tag, which adventurers can use to record their greatest Juju tales. They will then report to Aladdin’s Oasis, where Adventure Trading Company representatives and local historians will be on hand to collect their stories and thank the “head storytellers” of Adventureland with a special mystery Juju. As the day continues, all Story Tags will be collected and displayed on Story Lines inside Aladdin’s Oasis for all your fellow explorers to see.
Come prepared to tell your story of courage, friendship, humor … anything that your expeditions have inspired in you! Remember, supplies are extremely limited and will only be available for this one day.
Come join us one last time and bid farewell to Adventure Trading Company at Disneyland park!
Issue 60 (Adventure Trading Company)[]
LOST SHIPMENT[]
JUNGLE NAGIVATION CO. LOSES SHIPMENT - AGAIN!
Report by Carla Quest
There’s been a bungle in the jungle! For a record breaking 57th time this year, the Jungle Navigation Company has lost a shipment of precious cargo. A cargo crate full of rare Juju was headed towards the visiting Adventure Trading Company outpost but was lost somewhere in transit.
The cargo in question contains unique Juju depicting a miniature version of a large stone elephant carving found alongside the Jungle Cruise river’s course. Some consider the pieces to be the world’s smallest replicas of the world’s largest animal cracker. Highly desired by adventurers, the Juju is considered, appropriately enough, the simple of a great tracker.
All efforts to track the shipment by JNC officials have fallen short with fel leads. The Adventure Trading Company is reaching out to resident adventurers and offering a reward for discovery of the goods. A representative of the Adventure Trading Company advised, “If I were to start anywhere, I’d call the missing shipment’s phone number of the Jungle Navigation Company. Once you find the lost shipment, be sure to ask the recipient to send it back our way!”
THE ELEPHANT JUJU[]
An Expose by Priyanka Manhas
Every Juju reflects an important attribute of the owner. The rare and exotic Elephant Juju symbolizes and represents the tracking ability of adventurers. Anyone who adorns their gear with the talisman may be trusted to track down or hunt for precious artifacts. Noted Elephant Juju luminaries include Dr. Albert Falls, who discovered the legendary Schweitzer Falls in 1903, and Lord Henry Mystic, the explorer who assembled the largest collection of lost goods of the last century. Anybody who is awarded this artifact shall be celebrated as one of the greatest adventurers in the land.
MONKEY BUSINESS AT TROPICAL IMPORTS[]
By “Tiki” Teemu Ojanen
“They came out of nowhere” Louie Majors, a shopkeeper at Tropical Imports recalls. “There must have been at least 50 of them. They came from each entryway and the ceiling. Heck, one even popped out of the ice barrel and scared me down to the ground!” This is the 16th time this year that Tropical Imports has been overrun by primates.
This should come as little surprise as the little shop nestled between the Jungle Navigation Company’s entrance and exit carries Adventureland’s finest produce. Tropical Imports has been delighting customers for generations as a food market receiving port and resellers of the ‘rare and exotic’.
The shopkeepers at Tropical Imports are beginning to take precautions to prevent any future monkey melees. “It’s obvious that these little guys love the produce. We don’t mind if they have a piece of fruit now and then, we just don’t want them destroying our shop. As a compromise, we have decided to offer free bananas to our monkey friends and have them hanging on a simian safe pole above our entry.
ADVENTURER FINDS LOST SHIPMENT OF QUININE[]
By Ting Ting Xu
Legendary explorer Clive Berrendo has added another impressive feat to his already extensive resume. Last month the Jungle Navigation Company misplaced an important shipment of quinine and it was thought to be lost forever. The Daily Gnus reported the situation, placing it on the front page. This caught the attention of the master explorer.
“The headline caught my eye and I knew I could help,” explains Berrendo. “The first thing I noticed was the missing shipment’s phone number is an ad for the Jungle Navigation Company. I rang it up and a recorded message informed me to check the cracking board at Tropical Imports next to the Jungle Cruise. With a little sleuthing, I discovered the location that the barrels were mistakenly shipped to. Lo and behold, there they were!”
Great work, Clive! The Daily Gnus and Adventureland salute you!
GRAB A TIGER BY THE TAIL AT THE BENGAL BARBECUE[]
Report by Skipper X
Since its humble beginnings, the Bengal Barbecue has continued to dazzle dinners with its delectable dishes. I had the pleasure of dining at the eatery with two of my closest friends. As always, we were greeted with a smile by the cashier. I ordered a side of Tiger Tails with Vemonade, and my companions ordered a Safari Skewer with a Chieftan Chicken Skewer.
Each skewer was grilled to perfection and left the diners satisfied. I was impressed to find that my Tiger Tails were not actually tiger tails but rather amazingly tasty breadsticks! The unique shape and grill marks made for a convincing appearance, but the soft interior and crunchy crust reminded me of bread back home. My Venomade was a different story. I had to strum up a lot of courage to down this sour concoction of snake eggs and venom. In the end I was awarded a Juju as a reminder of my courage for drinking the infamous Venomade concoction.
Skipper X’s Final Review: 3/3 Survivors
JUNGLE NAVIGATION COMPANY LOSES TWO BOATS[]
Written by Skip Dockmonkey
Speculation has arisen about the location of two missing vessels from the Jungle Navigation Company’s fleet. Representatives have failed to comment on the whereabouts of the Mekong Maiden and Magdalena Maiden. No skippers are reported missing, but waiting passengers have noticed extensive patchwork to damage near the loading dock. No rewards or requests for information have been mentioned by the skippers.
IS HAMLET MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING?[]
Review by Thompson J. Gazelle
The Adventureland Gorilla Theatre Company has opened the new season with the classic drama Hamlet. The cast of Shakespearean simians has reinterpreted the piece as a contemporary commentary in the heart of Africa. The show is brilliantly performed on a wonderfully minimal set composed of a tent, miscellaneous sets, and an actual overturned vehicle that was unwilling donated by a visiting safari team.
While the performance is strong throughout the nearly twelve hour runtime, the highlight is the beautiful soliloquy by veteran performer Kejo the Silverback to a floating crate of explosives and produce. But that wasn’t the only ripe performance of the show. The audience went absolutely bananas for this classic. Additional performances have been added, so don’t let the chance to see this classic slip by!
ENTERTAINMENT SPOTLIGHT[]
By Lilikoi Humuhumunukunukuapuaa
The Daily Gnus focuses its spotlight on one of The Enchanted Tiki Room’s fabulously fragrant floral choral members, Flora. As part of a beautiful bouquet of balladeers, Flora doesn’t often get the spotlight shined upon her. It is now time for her moment in the sun. This orchid was planted and grown in the enchanted lanai before putting down roots inside The Enchanted Tiki Room. She quickly blossomed into one of the show’s top performers. Her alluring alto voice resonates amongst the birds and tiki drummers. She credits her vocal talents to the training received from legendary potted performer Ophelia.
In her spare time, Flora likes to soak up the sun and grow as a performer. She hopes one day to become a soloist and record her own album. Until then she will continue to sing alongside her petaled pals, Rose and Lily.

RETRACTIONS[]
- We previously published a report entitled “Rare Tigers Spotted in Adventureland.” After further investigation it was discovered that the tigers in question were actually leopards.
- Several readers wrote to us in our review of The Enchanted Tiki Room. José was misquoted singing “In the Tiki, Tiki, Tiki, Tiki Room” when the actual lyrics are “In the Tiki, Tiki, Tiki, Tiki, Tiki Room.”
SCIENTISTS CRY FOWL[]
By Abigail Samson
There’s something strange happening down in the tropical rivers of Adventureland. Recently a large population of mallard ducks has moved into our beloved outpost. Their cheery disposition is a wonderful addition to our community. While everyone seems to enjoy their company, there is one group that is confused by their presence.
Scientists are baffled as to why the North American waterfowl have decided to visit the jungle. “Their survival skills are remarkable!” states one scientist. “Typically these birds would be prime prey for a variety of animals. This flock, however, seems to go about their business in the jungle seemingly unnoticed. I even saw a few of them perched on the heads of hungry crocodiles!”
Nobody is sure just how long these birds will grace us with their company. But one thing is for sure. These ducklings are just about the cutest thing in town!
DATELINE ADVENTURELAND: THE MYSTERY OF THE TREEHOUSE JUJU[]
Report by “Tallahassee” Glover
Greetings, adventurers… “Tallahassee” Glover here with a mysterious dispatch from the jungles of Adventureland. Even the leaves in the trees are whispering about a special Juju found at the Adventure Trading Company. Legend says this Juju may have the power to unlock the mysteries of the ancient petroglyphs found at the base of the Disneydendron semperflorens grandis that grows nearby.
I had to know more about this puzzling Juju, so I took to the wilds of Adventureland. First, I consulted José - the famous host of The Enchanted Tiki Room, at the far reaches of the land. Who would know more about trees than a bird? But it seems that Jose’s busy performance schedule keeps him from exploring, so I turned to a jungle expert… someone who sees explorers come and go through there every day.
“Ah yes, I’ve seen this Juju before,” Shrunken Ned, the head shrink of the jungle, told me before offering. “I used to have one. I would wear it around my neck. But as you can see, that has become rather hard these days!” I think I’ll have to keep investigating the mystery on my own. Look for the Treehouse Juju at the Adventure Trading Company adventurers, and discover its secrets for yourself.
FUN WITH PUNS![]
By “Jungle” Jorge Jump
The skippers of the Jungle Navigation Company are on the hunt for “Adventureland’s Funniest Joke.” Known as the funniest crew to ever sail the jungle rivers of the world, the skippers are always looking to add a few zingers to their routine.
Skipper Dave, a Jungle Navigation Company correspondence, recognized this challenge. “I’m not lion when I say we’re looking for gnu material. We recognize that this challenge is like a giraffe at a take-out window, you know - a tall order.
But the animals have already been really helping us out. The gorillas have some jokes that a-peeled to us, and the elephants had a whole trunk full. We haven’t reached out to the local bat population though. Their humor is way too dark for us! Let us get to the point. In the end, we believe our fellow adventurers could help us out greatly.”
Luckily, the Adventure Trading Company is in the area selling handbooks with a crash course on river navigation. So make like a skipper traveling through a pool of hippos and give it a shot.

Dateline Adventureland: Holiday Shipment Lost in the Jungle at Disneyland Park[]
by Talahassee Glover
Be on alert, adventurers! We’ve just received word that the Jungle Navigation Company has done it again … an important shipment has been misplaced somewhere in the jungles of Adventureland at Disneyland park. It’s not Juju headed for the Adventure Trading Company this time, but it’s something almost as valuable!
The perpetually homesick skippers at the world-famous Jungle Cruise were hoping to bring a little more holiday cheer to their Disneyland park outpost this season, so they went all-out and ordered a shipment of goodies and garlands to adorn their little corner of the jungle. But somewhere along the way, the shipment was misplaced.
When the Jungle Cruise reopens at Disneyland park for the holiday season, keep a keen eye out, adventurers! Let us know if you see any of their misplaced merriment as you explore the wilds of Adventureland this holiday season.
Dateline Adventureland: Lost Holiday Shipment Found Aboard the Jingle Cruise at Disneyland Park[]
by Talahassee Glover
Happy holidays, adventurers! You may recall from my last dispatch that an important holiday shipment has been lost in the jungles of Adventureland at Disneyland park. I’ve got good news to report today – the shipment has been found! Well, sort of …
As you can see, all the holiday cheer that was supposed to be delivered to the Jungle Cruiseskippers is now being appropriated by the animals of the jungle. Only one thing to do … turn the Jungle Cruise into the Jingle Cruise!
Looks like those fruitcakes aren’t going anywhere anytime soon … good thing they last for so long!
And I don’t think those stockings are being hung by anyone’s chimney this year.
A Conversation with Alberta Falls (Jungle Cruise)[]
Can you tell us a little about you?[]
Certainly! My name is Alberta Falls and I am the owner, manager, bookkeeper, and head mechanic of the Jungle Navigation Company. You may have heard of our world-famous cruises through the jungle. I came to Adventureland when I was 8 years old. You see, my mother, Sneh Falls, is an amazing artist from India and my father, Albert Falls, Jr., is an art historian from England. The two fell in love in what I consider to be the greatest romance of all time. But that's a tale for another time. Now where was I?
Ah yes, at a young age I was often on the road with my parents as they travelled between museums and universities. You know, places like Cairo, New York, London. Well, one summer they took me to Adventureland for the first time to visit my grandparents on my father's side. I instantly fell in love with the place. I was able to climb, swim, and dig anywhere I wanted, which for some strange reason, museums and universities frowned upon! But my parents have always supported my free spirit, so they gave me their blessing for me to spend the rest of the summer with my grandparents and the riverboat skippers. To make a long story short, it was a summer that never ended and I'm still here today. I've called Adventureland home ever since.
What lead you to have a passion for these excursions?[]
As you may know, my grandfather, Dr. Albert Falls, was a member of the famed Society of Explorers and Adventurers. He and his colleagues were always off on wild expeditions to solve the world's greatest mysteries. My grandfather, Victoria Marie Falls, was an adventuress in her own right, but usually opted to stay behind to look after me and keep my family shipping company on track. Naturally, I learned a lot from her. I also found myself amongst the skippers. These amazing men and women took me under their wing and taught me everything there is to know about driving a boat, spotting animals, and going over waterfalls. When I was old enough, my grandfather started taking me on some of his expeditions. I was able to use everything I had learned from the skippers while on these trips.
I inherited the company following my grandfather's mysterious disappearance. While the search for him continues, we also knew we needed to keep the boats moving. The shipping business was down and we were looking for a new source of revenue. One of the skippers suggested we started offering, "Jungle Cruises" to tourists visiting Adventureland and I saw this not only as a great business opportunity but also a way to keep my beloved grandfather's legacy alive. The rest is history.
What do you hope guests take away from your trips?[]
I hope every passenger experiences the beauty and grandeur of the jungle. It is what I fell in love with at such a young age and I'm excited to share it with people from all over the globe. Secondly, I am beyond lucky to have a crew of witty and knowledgeable tour guides that are always eager to share the jungle with everyone they meet. There's no guarantee that you'll spot even a single butterfly, let alone an elephant, on each cruise. But we do guarantee you'll have a unique adventure that can only happen aboard a cruise down the tropical rivers of the world.
Lastly, I hope they take away all their personal belongings. Our Lost and Found is getting pretty full!
Do any particular excursions stick out as memorable to you?[]
There are so many to choose from! From my first trip to Mystic Point with my grandfather, or a particular trip to New Zealand in which I picked up my little travel companion, Kamaka the kakapo. When I was 16, I was able to take a solo cruise up the Ganga [Ganges] River to visit my other grandparents in India. I'll never forget their faces as I docked the Molopo Marie all by myself!
But really, I'm looking forward to the next trip! Actually, this week, I have some esteemed passengers joining me from around the world for a private tour down the river. I'll be hosting a special cruise for a special friend of mine from Mexico, the renowned painter Rosa Soto Dominguez, as well as a noted botanist from Nova Scotia named Leonard Moss. I guess he is just trying to branch out with his studies. Also, I recently met Dr. Kon Chunosuke, an entomologist from Japan, who camped out alongside the river. Would you believe it, he is a member of the Society of Explorers and Adventurers just like my grandfather? It really is a small world, after all. Who knows what other visitors from around the world might arrive between then and now? For instance, my cousin Siobhan "Puffin" Murphy from Ireland, may show up unannounced to take a birdwatching expedition! You just never know what to expect around here.
How does it feel keeping your grandfather's legacy alive?[]
The Jungle Navigation Company is more than just a business, it's my family. I'm honoured to lead my crew of skippers as we embark on new adventures every day - just like my grandfather. But he would never want me to think that I had to fill his big shoes. He'd tell me to get my own shoes and to go get them dirty in the jungle. After all, we all have our amazingly unpredictable adventures to live and stories to tell.
Trivia[]
- In the Adventure Trading Company, the Daily Gnus mentions the locations of the Lost River Delta, Mystic Point and Harambe. These three locations are counterparts to Adventureland from Tokyo DisneySea, Hong Kong Disneyland and Disney's Animal Kingdom.
- In the community-announcements was a posting from a man named Jacque asking for readers to adopt his snakelets. It is theorized this might be a misprint of, "Jock" referring to the character of Jock Lindsey from Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981).
