The Creature from the Black Lagoon is a 1954 horror/science-fiction film made by Universal Studios.

Summary[]

This film followed an archaeological expedition studying remains of humanoid amphibians in the Black Lagoon of the Amazon river. However, the expedition happened upon the last member of this species, "The Gill-Man" who became infatuated with taking team-member Kay Lawrence as its mate. The Gill-Man stalked the expedition and killed several members of its crew before kidnapping Kay.

Jungle Cruise connections[]

Jungle Cruise[]

Jungle Cruise imagineer Chris Mueller who sculpted the animal figures for the Jungle Cruise also sculpted the Gill-Man for Creature from the Black Lagoon. The character of Felix Pechman XIII is said to originate from Silver Springs, the community where Creature from the Black Lagoon was filmed (along with Tarzan of the Apes). The Trader Sam's bars have used the Gill-Man's likeness for the drink HippopotoMai-Tai, a drink themed towards the Hippo Pool of the Jungle Cruise's African veldt.[1]

Trader Sam's[]

Trader Sam's Enchanted Tiki Bar[]

A tiki rendition of the Gill-Man's likeness is used for the drink HippopotoMai-Tai.

Trader Sam's Grog Grotto[]

In this bar, the HippopotoMai-Tai is modelled after Māui from Disney's Polynesian Village Resort instead of the Gill-Man. There are also references to Trader Sam having visited the aforementioned Silver Springs, Florida.

Trivia[]

  • A crocodilian creature modelled after the Gill-Man attacking Mélanie Ravenswood used to appear in the stretching-room of Phantom Manor in Disneyland Paris. One of the portraits to replace the original paintings was of Captain Rowan D. Falls, a character affiliated with Dr. Albert Falls.
  • The Gill-Man HippopotoMai-Tai mugs appear in an episode of the TV series Loki.
