"We are underway and proceeding on a course that will take us on a voyage through liquid space. En route, we will pass below the polar ice cap, and then probe depths seldom seen by man. Make yourself comfortable, but please remain seated at all times."
—Submarine Captain

The Submarine Captain is the conjectural name for a character from defunct attraction Submarine Voyage thru Liquid Space. The character makes an off-screen appearance in the Trader Sam's bars.

History[]

Background[]

This man was an American submarine captain, presumably around the year 1986 though possibly earlier in the 1950s.[1] The captain piloted nuclear-submarines out of the Submarine Lagoon in the futurist colony of, "Tomorrowland" in California. At one point, he lead a journey under the polar ice-caps of the North Pole. On this expedition, he may have encountered the sunken city of Atlantis, inhabited by mermaids and a sea-serpent though he discredited this as a hallucination caused by being underwater for too long.

Audio of the captain made to his passenger on this journey came into the possession of ancient South American mixologist, "Trader Sam". Be it through an audio system or magic, Sam played this audio when a drink themed around the victorian submarine the Nautilus was ordered in his Enchanted Tiki Bar and Grog Grotto.

Development history[]

This character was the unseen narrator of Disneyland's original Submarine Voyage attraction, loosely inspired by the journey under the polar ice-caps of the USS Nautilus (SSN-571) completed in 1958. In the Magic Kingdom's version of the attraction, he was replaced by Captain Nemo from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. The attraction was later re-themed to Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage, where he was replaced by an Australian captain working for the N.E.M.O. Institute.

Jungle Cruise appearances[]

Trader Sam's[]

In both Trader Sam's Enchanted Tiki Bar and Trader Sam's Grog Grotto, the captain's audio-clip saying, "We are underway and proceeding on a course that will take us on a voyage through liquid space. En route, we will pass below the polar ice cap, and then probe depths seldom seen by man" plays upon the order of the Nautilus drink.

Other appearances[]

Submarine Voyage thru Liquid Space[]

The captain was the original narrator of this attraction.

Trivia[]
