Shakes Speare‏‎ also referred to as Shake-Spear and Shake Spear is a character from the Skipper Canteen. He is a parody of real world author/playwright/poet, William Shakespeare.

History[]

Shakes Speare was an author likely in the early 20th and/or late 19th century. They seemingly authored jungle themed parodies/tributes of the works of William Shakespeare.

  • The Comedy of Ears: A play on The Comedy of Errors (1594).
  • Droolius Caesar: A parody of Julius Caesar (1599)
  • Hamlet: A Lion's Tale: A reference to The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark and its Disney adaptation, The Lion King (1994).
  • Sam IV Part 1: A play on Henry IV, Part 1 (1592). Likely a reference to the Jungle Cruise character of Trader Sam.

Trivia[]

  • The books of Speare contain several additional Disney references
    • The book Hamlet: A Lion's Tale is a reference to the film The Lion King (1994), a Disney film revolving around lions which was loosely based on William Shakespeare's Hamlet.
    • The Sam books are a reference to the history plays of William Shakespeare and are likely alluding to Trader Sam.
    • A Comedy of Ears might be referencing the mouse-ears of Mickey Mouse.
  • A book titled A Midsummer's Night Cruise also appears in the Skipper Canteen with no author.[1] It is in the vain of the Shakes Spear books given how it is a Jungle Cruise themed parody of A Midsummer's Night Dream.
