The Polynesian Village is the conjectural name for the fictional setting of Disney's Polynesian Village Resort. It is likewise the setting of Trader Sam's Grog Grotto.

Description[]

This is a village located along the Seven Seas Lagoon on an unidentified Polynesian island. Many of the structures in the resort were named for different locations in the Pacific. The village seemingly worshiped a variety of deities, represented by, "Tiki" sculptures.

History[]

Background[]

Early history[]

It is unknown how old the village is but its history might go back to, "The Long Pause" period, a roughly 1000 year period near the turn of the millennium. The people of the village celebrated Māui as their icon and worshiped many Māori gods with some of their idols being identical to those of the Enchanted Tiki Room. Likely around the end of the long pause, the village was visited by a folk-hero known as Moana who had previously gone on adventures with Maui. Moana influenced the village for eras to come with her name being used throughout it and her likeness decorating many features.

In the victorian era prior to 1869, the island was visited by a Victorian nuclear-submarine known as The Nautilus. This submarine was captained by the mysterious and morally dark Captain Nemo of the island Vulcania. Depictions of the Nautilus would become part of the local culture which recognized it as a vessel but seemingly knew little of its nature.[1]

Trader Sam[]

Around the late-1950s/early-1960s, an ancient magic-user from the Amazon rainforest named, "Trader Sam" came to the village. With assistance from his cousin Chief Nah-mee and his affiliate Skip Dockmonkey from the Jungle Navigation Company, they established a bar in the Great Ceremonial House known as, "Trader Sam's Grog Grotto". The Grog Grotto was the second bar opened by Sam in the 20th century, its sister-location being, "Trader Sam's Enchanted Tiki Bar" which was also in the Pacific and which was connected to the mystical Wilds of Adventureland.

Trader Sam's Grog Grotto would host a variety of different characters throughout its existence. Amongst them were the aristocratic British toad J. Thaddeus Toad, Esq. whose car-keys Sam had to confiscate, and apparently the popular singer/actress Annette Funicello who to Sam's dismay was at one point thrown into the sea as a joke.[2] Possible patrons of the bar might have included the likes of womanizing aviator Hathaway Browne, the talking cockatoo Rosita and Walt Disney himself who was considered to be Sam's best-customer.[3] The coming of the bar seemingly brought paranormal, "Tropical Snowstorms" during the Holiday season, engulfing much if not all of the village's region in snow and causing at-least one of its nearby volcanoes to erupt blizzards; a similar event which occured at Sam's Adventureland bar.

Sam also decorated the grotto with curios such as the taxidermied arm of the giant squid which sank the Nautilus in 1869 and which Sam's magic animated, the bottled pirate-ship The Wicked Wench which sometimes sprang to life within a contained storm, the shrunken heads of members of his familu from the East-Coast, a portrait of the Nautilus on Vulcania, a figure of the Florida Orange Bird, a life-preserver from the Norway pavilion of Walt Disney's Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow, a wooden carving of Sam's friend Lampie and an idol of the disaster goddess Uh-Oa. Captain Nemo's spirit was seemingly sometimes summoned within the bar with his voice being heard, commanding the Nautilus XIII.

Later history[]

At some point following 2002, the village would host the young girl Lilo Pelekai and her pet alien Stitch. The two sometimes spent time in 'Ohana and its neighbouring playhouse. Like with Moana, the influence of this pair influenced artwork and establishments throughout the village.

Trivia[]

  • While there is no indication that the village is part of the Wilds of Adventureland, in real-life the resort was constructed geographically across from the Magic Kingdom's Adventureland to maintain a sense of theme.
  • Cinderella Castle, Space Mountain and the Grand Floridian are all visible from the resort but it is unlikely that these are canonical appearances.
  • The area Kiki Tiki's Water Play Area might be connected to the Adventure Trading Company character Tiki Kiki Serbano, a talent-scout for the Enchanted Tiki Room.
  • The, "Tropical Snowstorm" affiliated with Christmas at Trader Sam's parallels the backstory of Disney's Blizzard Beach where a rare tropical blizzard struck Florida in the 1990s.
