The Pith gorilla is the conjectural name for a gorilla from the Jungle Cruise.

History[]

Biography[]

This was a gorilla in the Congo Basin of Africa during the 1930s. In 1938, they raided a base-camp for the Jungle Navigation Company during which they tried on a pith helmet.

Development history[]

The gorilla raiders were added to the Jungle Cruise in a comedy oriented refurbishment occurring in 1977/1978. The characters were designed by animator Marc Davis, replacing a family of rhinos which appeared in the same portion of the attraction.

This gorilla can be seen in the base-camp, observing itself in the mirror while trying on a pith helmet.

In this overlay, the gorilla is dressed like Santa Claus and tries on a Santa hat.

Trivia[]

  • Pith helmets are considered to be an icon for European colonialism, particularly in Africa.
