Nah-mee's umbrella is an item from the Jungle Cruise.
Description[]
This item was a black umbrella with a faded handle and tattered canopy.
History[]
Background[]
Development history[]
Nah-mee's tribal garb mixed with his top-hat and umbrella was a gag designed by Marc Davis, seemingly lifted from the film Peter Pan (1953). In this film, a racist stereotyped depiction of an Indigenous American took the top hat and umbrella from the British boy John Darling. The umbrella also resembles one used by Rose Sayer in The African Queen (1951), a film which inspired the Jungle Cruise.
The ideology behind this gag had racist connotations, with the implication being that Nah-mee is, "Uncivilized" and, "Savage" while wearing, "Civilized" garb, feeding into racist myths of Jivaroan peoples.
Appearances[]
Jock Lindsey's Hangar Bar[]
In the lost & found of this bar is a shrunken head next to a stack of umbrellas, seemingly referencing Nah-mee. This might be referencing Nah-mee as a past customer of Jock Lindsey's bar in Disney Springs, Florida.
Jungle Cruise[]
Nah-mee wielded this umbrella prior to his removal. Concept-art shows it in Trader Sam's Gift Shop! for Walt Disney World's Jungle Cruise. Albert Awol makes the comment of, " Since these animals have been known to spray water at passing boats, you are advised to wear appropriate attire. Or bring an umbrella" on the topic of the elephant bathing pool.
Jingle Cruise[]
Nah-mee held this while appearing as Sam-ta Claus.
Jungle Cruise: Wildlife Expeditions[]
Nah-mee still appears in this incarnation of the attraction where he is accompanied by Ellie the elephant and sells fruits and pendents.
Skipper Canteen[]
A book by Nah-mee's cousin Trader Sam is in the library titled, "Top Hats and Umbrellas".
Trader Sam's Enchanted Tiki Bar[]
The umbrella is hung on a wall with a note saying, "Return to Chief Nah-Mee". It also appears on a photograph of Nah-mee.
