Malaria is a real-world disease which spreads via mosquito.

Description[]

Malaria is an infectious disease caused by Plasmodium bacteria which target the livers of animals like humans. Malaria causes fever, vomiting, and a yellow discolouration of the skin. It can also result in seizures, comas and often times the death of those infected. Malaria is spread by the saliva of female mosquitos into the blood of mammals like humans. While traditionally native to parts of Asia and Europe, the disease was spread to the Americas by colonists causing mass death. Typical treatment comes from the substance quinine.

Adventure Trading Company[]

The Daily Gnus had a story by Ting Ting Xu on adventurer Clive Berrendo locating a lost shipment of quinine.

Jungle Cruise[]

In Disneyland's Jungle Cruise, Nigel Greenwater mentions Trader Sam and his establishment of Tropical Imports having received a new shipment of quinine, a medication used to treat malaria. In Walt Disney World's Jungle Cruise was a removed prop in the Amazon River Base which was a poster reading, "Malaria Kills" in a glass case along with photographs of elephants and a request for the remains of the Missing Search Party.[2] Another crate in the Amazon River Base is labelled as containing mosquitos (stegomyia fasciata) to be sent to the Office of Prevention and Treatment of Malaria.

Skipper humour sometimes regard illness of Malaria. A recorded skipper joke for returning to the boathouse involves the skipper advertising, "Don't forget to enter our Jungle Cruise drawing! The winner will receive a free case of malaria!".

Jingle Cruise[]

A joke sometimes said by the skippers upon returning to the boathouse is, "This New Year's Eve: fireworks! Dancing! Festivities! Good times had by all! ...will not be found here. Just malaria and elephants. Lots of elephants".

Skipper Survival Guide[]

In this retconned backstory, the boathouse in the Lost Delta originally belonged to one Colonel Blumbert before he contracted Malaria in 1928, forcing him to leave the jungle and sell the boathouse to the Jungle Navigation Company.

Trivia[]

  • The mosquito-transmitted disease of yellow fever is also alluded to in the Jungle Cruise of Walt Disney World via late-employee E.L. O'Fevre.
