The Macaques are a genus of monkey which appear in the Jungle Cruise.
Description[]
Macaques are a species of old-world monkey which are native to Asia and North Africa. In the Jungle Cruise's lore, some also live in the Amazon rainforest via unknown circumstances.
History[]
Background[]
Development history[]
The monkeys were designed for the Jungle Cruise by animator Marc Davis. In 2021, the monkeys were installed in the controversial scene Trader Sam's Gift Shop! which replaced the infamously racist audio-animatronics of Trader Sam and Chief Nah-mee. Here, imagineers copied Marc Davis' gorilla gag (for the second time in the refurbishment) and had them ransacking belongings stolen by Trader Sam.
Appearances[]
Jungle Cruise[]
In the Magic Kingdom's Jungle Cruise, a family of macaques appear within Shir Lee Temple, rummaging through ancient treasures. In Disneyland's Jungle Cruise, they appear in Trader Sam's Gift Shop!, playing with his supply. One of these monkeys takes a photograph of guests using Sam's camera.
Living with the Land[]
The monkeys from the Jungle Cruise are repurposed in this attraction.
Maharajah Jungle Trek[]
The endangered lion-tailed macaques appear in this attraction at Disney's Animal Kingdom.
Skipper Canteen[]
Columns in this mansion have carvings of the monkeys holding vases as they do in Shir Lee Temple.[1]
Trivia[]
- Some have put forwards that the two monkeys tugging over underpants in Trader Sam's Gift Shop! was copied from the Jurassic Park ride in Universal Studios where two compsognathus tug at a shirt.[2]
- In the Adventure Trading Company, the Daily Gnus reported on monkeys terrorizing Sam's other business Tropical Imports.
