History[]
Background[]
This was a lion pride which lived in a rock formation along the Nile River in the African veldt during the 1930s. They were often observed by passing-by boats.
Development history[]
The lions were installed in the Jungle Cruise in 1964, inspired by the Disney True-Life Adventures film, "The African Lion". A removed feature of the Umbala village was the carcass of a lion which the tribes-members were celebrating the kill of due to it having attacked their village. A pair of lionesses used to appear, fighting over zebra meat.

In the Disneyland queue, Nigel Greenwater mentions the True-Life Adventurers Club having a lecture on, "The African Lion". Greenwater also mentions one Reverend Goff of the Jungle Mission looking to relocate a lion cub and two chimpanzees from the mission's veterinary clinic. In the Magic Kingdom's queue, Awol mentions them in an ad for the Elephant Safari Company, saying they take guests to see, "Lions, tigers and bears. Oh my", referencing The Wizard of Oz (1939).
