History[]

Biography[]

Real-world history[]

Jungle Cruise[]

Jules Verne was a French author in the 19th century. In 1870, he published the story of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea which recalled the events surrounding the dark Captain Nemo and his victorian submarine, the Nautilus. How Verne learned of these events is unknown but prior to his death, he also published a story called, "800 Leagues on the Amazon".

Jungle Cruise appearances[]

Skipper Canteen[]

In the library of the Skipper Canteen is a fictional book which is titled 800 Leagues on the Amazon by "Verne".[1] There is also a map by Captain Mary Oceaneer, depicting the Nautilus being wrangled by the giant squid. Another book in the canteen references the character of, "The Timekeeper", a robotic time-traveller who met Jules Verne in the attraction The Timekeeper.

Trader Sam's Enchanted Tiki Bar[]

A copy of Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is in Sam's possession. The bar is also filled with in-universe references to the story of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, identifying Sam as having been friends with Ned Land and travelled to Vulcania.

Other connections[]

Adventureland Treehouse[]

Vernes' 1867/1868 book In Search of the Castaways appears in the kitchen area.

Adventure Trading Company[]

One of the members of the titular Adventure Trading Company was Palle Huld, a historic filmmaker best known for having travelled around the world unaccompanied in 1946 as part of a competition in tribute to Vernes' work.

Jungle Cruise[]

The Disney adaptation of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was art-designed by Harper Goff and had groundbreaking special-effects supervised by Bob Mattey. Both of these individuals were influential imagineers in the development of the Jungle Cruise. Incidentally, animator Marc Davis also designed scenes for the Magic Kingdom attraction 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Submarine Voyage.

An unused concept for the attraction would have had the Giant Squid from the film appear in Disneyland's Jungle Cruise.[2] In Walt Disney World's Jungle Cruise is a piece of luggage from Castaway Cay, a real-life resort which features a sunken Nautilus XIII.

Trader Sam's[]

Both of these bars contain elements from Disney's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

Other appearances[]

Horizons[]

Jules Verne appeared in this attraction, riding a rocket similar to that from his 1865 book De la Terre à la Lune, trajet direct en 97 heures 20 minutes.

Iron Man Experience[]

Amongst the late Howard Stark's possessions is a copy of From Earth to the Moon.[3]

Main Street, U.S.A.[]

In Disneyland Paris, Jules Verne and H.G. Wells seem to appear as they did in the Timekeeper, on a mural promoting the U.S. Steamship Company.

Space Mountain[]

Disneyland Paris[]

Jules Verne made a cameo in Disneyland Paris' Space Mountain (also known as Discovery Mountain), an attraction inspired by his 1865 book De la Terre à la Lune, trajet direct en 97 heures 20 minutes. Verne appeared outside one of his rockets, dressed in a steampunk space-suit and observing space with a telescope.

Magic Kingdom[]

In Starport Seven-Five is a screen which mentions, "Verne Settlement Two-Eight" as an active space-port on Earth's moon.[4]

The Timekeeper[]

Verne was a major character in this attraction where he was portrayed by actor Michel Piccoli. Here, Verne was an attendee of the Expo Universelle de 1900. After mocking H.G. Wells' model of a time-machine, Verne was hijacked by the eccentric robotic time-travellers the Timekeeper and 9-Eye who took him on a tour of the future. At the end of the attraction, he and H.G. Wells are shown to have collaborated in creating their own time-machine where they briefly ran into the Timekeeper and 9-Eye at the Paris expo of 2189.
