Jane Porter also known in the book as Jane Clayton, Lady Greystoke or Jane Parker in early cinema is a character from Edgar Rice Burroughs' Tarzan of the Apes.
History[]
Biography[]
Jane Porter was a wealthy English painter 19th century who was the daughter of one Professor Archimedes Q. Porter. In 1882, she travelled to the Congo to study gorillas along with her father and a hunter named Clayton. While in the Congo she was separated from the group by a congress of aggressive baboons.
Jane was narrowly saved by Tarzan, a human, "Ape-Man" who was raised by gorillas. Jane and Tarzan were infatuated with one another with Jane also teaching Tarzan human culture and the English language. When Jane and her father were to return home after not finding any gorillas, Tarzan was manipulated by Clayton into revealing the location of the apes. This turned out to be a trap as Clayton lead a mutiny to capture the gorillas and sell them.
Tarzan managed to free the group and fight Clayton, ending in Clayton's demise. Following the battle, Tarzan was deemed the, "King of the Apes" while Jane and her father were to return to England. Out of love for Tarzan, Jane stayed in the jungle with her father following suit. The three took up residence in a treehouse which had been constructed decades earlier by Tarzan's deceased human parents.
