Indiana Jones Summer of Hidden Mysteries was an event at Disneyland's Adventureland in the summer of 2008, made to promote the film Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
Summary[]
Various symbols were added across Adventureland which when translated, read, "To survive the Temple of the Forbidden Eye, beware the eyes of Mara". There was also a photo opportunity featuring a fake rolling boulder, similar to the one in Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Jungle Cruise[]
The Jungle Cruise received a minor refurbishment made to tie in with a form of scavenger-hunt. Several props from the Indiana Jones films were littered throughout the attraction for guests to find, ending with Trader Sam being in possession of a tablet depicting the Crystal Skull. In the backstory, these artifacts were left in the jungle by Indy while on a mission (indicating the overlay was set following Indiana Jones: The Last Crusade in 1938). These artifacts included the crate containing the Lost Ark near Kejo at the Congo base camp, Mola Ram's headdress within headhunter territory, Dr. Henry Jones, Sr.'s umbrella along the African veldt, the life-preserver from the Vasquez de Coronado at the boathouse, and Trader Sam possessing a stone tablet depicting the Crystal Skull of Akator.[1] There were several artifacts not actually hidden on the attraction that served as red herrings in the pamphlets for the overlay.[2]
Random Acts of Indy[]
In this feature, Indiana Jones fought adversary Desert Hawk over a map of the Temple of the Forbidden Eye. This started with them fighting atop the Jungle Cruise's boathouse/Tropical Imports, the next was on a balcony over Adventureland Bazaar, and the final was on the suspension bridge of Tarzan's Treehouse.
Indiana Jones and the Secret of the Stone Tiger[]
This show as held in a re-themed Aladdin's Oasis and as a prequel to Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Forbidden Eye.
Trivia[]
- The villain Dr. Rachel Flannery was a point of controversy when the Random Acts of Indy event occurred, due to Orange County Register taking issue with Indiana Jones fighting a woman. In the context of the attraction and its story, this criticism was more sexist in practice as she incited the fight and had her own villainous scheme meaning that Indy not fighting her would be to treat women as inherently more weak and fragile due to their gender. Regardless, the show was changed to have Indiana Jones simply dodge her attacks instead of punch her.
