Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Forbidden Eye is an attraction in Disneyland's Adventureland, themed towards the Indiana Jones film-franchise. It has a tied development history and backstory with the Jungle Cruise.
History[]
Background[]
The attraction is set in the Lost Delta of India in the year 1936, directly before the events of Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981). Indiana Jones and the Lost Delta Archaeological Expedition have uncovered the long-lost Temple of the Forbidden Eye, a temple dedicated to the powerful temptress deity Mara. Jones himself went missing within the temple, searching for Mara's mysterious power-source the Jewel of Power leaving his ally Sallah in-charge. In Jones' absence, Sallah has been pressured by British Colonial Affairs into running temple tours which he hopes might aid in locating the lost Doctor Jones.
Development history[]
This attraction was made in 1995, before Disney bought LucasFilm. The creation of the attraction coincided with re-theming and refurbishments of the Jungle Cruise to give the attractions a shared backstory and setting. In 2001, the attraction was recreated in Tokyo DisneySea as Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Crystal Skull.
Jungle Cruise connections[]
Disney Parks[]
Adventure Trading Company[]
In this attraction, one Dr. Henry Jones was referenced as a member of the Adventure Trading Company though this could be referring to either Indiana Jones or his father, Prof. Henry Jones, Sr.. The Eye of Mara Juju mission had guests assisting Indiana Jones' Lost Delta Archaeological Expedition at the Temple of the Forbidden Eye. The Daily Gnus newspaper also had several allusions to the Indiana Jones series. There were advertisements for the Temple of the Forbidden Eye.
Club 33[]
The, "Guards of Mara" drink served at the Tiki Takeover event was modelled after the snake statues of Mara's temple. The menu paired the drink with a ticket belonging to Sneh Falls for a trip to India in 1937.[1]
Indiana Jones Summer of Hidden Mysteries[]
One mission had guests finding hieroglyphs throughout Adventureland which when assembled translated to, "To survive the Temple of the Forbidden Eye, beware the eyes of Mara".[2]
Indiana Jones and the Secret of the Stone Tiger[]
At the end of this show, Indiana Jones left the Temple of Sherdil with the fragmented map to the temple.
Jungle Cruise[]
The Temple appears along the route of Disneyland's Jungle Cruise. Nigel Greenwater brings up the excavations on the temple twice during his queue audio-loop. Greenwater mentions Marcus Brody claiming that the temple is the discovery of the century to the anthropological society and later states the governor's men have been sent to the temple due to paranormal occurrences. There are also tablets from the temple within the Jungle Navigation Company's boathouse.[3] A map of the rivers of Adventure states that Jungle Navigation Company founder Dr. Albert Falls visited the temple in 1891. Tourists are shown in the Eye on the Globe newsreel as using a jungle cruise boat to travel to the Lost Delta.
Skipper Canteen[]
There are two books referencing Mara within the library of the Skipper Canteen. One is titled, "The Eyes of Mara" by Indiana Jones while the other is, "Seeking Knowledge" by Mara.
Trader Sam's Enchanted Tiki Bar[]
Sam has a photograph of himself outside of the temple.[4] There is a map of the temple in Trader Sam's possession, sent to him by Sallah.[5] There is also a newspaper speaking on the subject of tourists who disappeared in the temple. Letters to Sam from characters such as Marcus Brody and Sallah also reference the temple.
Film[]
Jungle Cruise (film)[]
Nigel Greenwater brings up Marcus Brody speaking on the Temple of the Forbidden Eye the Royal Anthropological Society which has a name strikingly similar to the Royal Anthropological and Diverse Adventures Society from the Jungle Cruise film.
Paraphernalia[]
Jungle Cruise Adventure Game[]
Stone sculptures of Mara's head are transported as cargo in this game.
Trivia[]
- The attraction shares a track layout with DINOSAUR/Countdown to Extinction in Disney's Animal Kingdom.
- There is a minor discrepancy in continuity between the Indiana Jones Encyclopedia and Indiana Jones Adventure as in the encyclopedia it states Indy happened upon the temple by chance directly after the events of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom while in the ride, messages reveal he located it via a black-market map. There is a further discrepancy with Indiana Jones stating he doesn't believe in the supernatural in Raiders of the Lost Ark (set after the ride) though this continuity error is shared with countless Indiana Jones materials, including Temple of Doom.
