Gnus, also known as Wildebeest are a genus of antelope, featured on the Jungle Cruise.

Description[]

Gnus are a genus of antelope, traditionally found in Eastern and Southern Africa though some can be found in North Africa's African Veldt (presumably in Sudan or Egypt). In the Adventureland regions, gnus are used as the namesake for the newspaper, The Daily Gnus.

Species[]

There are two main species of gnu with multiple sub-species.

  • Black wildebeest: Black Wildebeest (Connochaetes gnou) also known as the white-tailed gnu.
  • Blue wildebeest: The Blue Wildebeest (Connochaetes taurinus), also known as Common Wildebeest, brindled gnu, the white-bearded gnu, or the white-bearded wildebeest.

The gnus appear in the African Veldt scene. In the Amazon River Base is a plaque commemorating how the Jungle Navigation Company came in 2nd place for The Daily Gnus Annual Children’s Coloring Contest. On Frank Wolff's map, Alberta Falls made the annotation of, "Come see what's new!" over the African veldt.[1]
