Powel starred in the film Footlight Parade (1933) as the character Scotty Blair. This film was subject to a scene in the Great Movie Ride, albeit without Dick's character.

- Powel was the first actor to portray detective Philip Marlowe on film with said role having also been performed by Humphrey Boggart, actor of Charlie Allnut in The African Queen and Rick Blaine in Casablanca.
