Charles Houghton is a character from the Jungle Cruise film.

History[]

Biography[]

Charles Houghton was an explorer, cartographer, and writer in the latter end of the 19th century who had a wife and two children, Lily and MacGregor. Charles often told Lily stories of the Tears of the Moon tree, using a map of the Amazon rainforest created by conquistador Francisco Lopez de Heredia. Sometime in his life, Charles took his two children to many places around the world on his expeditions, including Bhutan and Delhi. Charles presumably died when his children were relatively young, their uncle becoming subsequent patriarch of the family.

A newspaper article about Lily Houghton's expedition to find the Tears of the Moon mentions Charles Houghton and his expeditions. According to the article, Charles was most famous for his trip to the Americas where he performed a round trip from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean in just 16 days. He began the trip in 1887 with 14 men and had the intention of mapping the entire region.

Charles' peers described him as a misanthrope. Apparently he had become bewildered by his voyages, and began to communicate less with his colleagues back in London. On his last voyage, he never returned to England and was declared dead.

Trivia[]

  • The name Charles might be an allusion to the Jungle Cruise's inspiration The African Queen (1951) where one of the leads is named Charlie Allnut.
  • Most of what we know about Charles Houghton, including his name, comes from a newspaper article that is shown very briefly right after Lily and MacGregor arrive in Porto Velho. The article is held by one of Prince Joachim's henchmen, Middlepart, and also features a portrait of Lily in London.
