The Chachapoyan Fertility Idol also known as the Idol of the Warriors or Idol of the Chachapoyan Warriors is an object from the film Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981).
Description[]
This was a solid-gold idol depicting the Chachapoyan goddess of fertility Pachamama.
History[]
Background[]
This fertility-idol was created around 64 BC by the Chachapoyan tribe of modern Peru. It was hidden away by priests in the Temple of the Chachapoyan Warriors. The temple would be filled with booby-traps and be used for rites-of-passage for warriors of the Chachapoyan tribe.
In 1936, the idol was sought after by archaeologist Indiana Jones who managed to conquer the temple's booby-traps and claim the item. Following this, the temple was reclaimed by the Chachapoyan tribe after having been aided by Jones' rival, the evil René Emile Belloq. Following this, Belloq stole the idol from the tribe and sold it off to wealthy antiques-dealer Saad Hassim in Marrakesh.
At some point following 1946, Indiana located the idol and sent his aviator Jock Lindsey to Marrakesh to recover it. Jock succeeded and had the idol in his bar within the Floridian town of Disney Springs by 1955 if not later.
Jungle Cruise appearances[]
Jungle Cruise[]
While promoting cruises on the Amazon river, Albert Awol references the idol through saying, "Come drift into the era of kings and golden idols".
Jungle River Cruise: Curse of the Emerald Trinity[]
The fertility idol is referenced in the Daily Colonial Journal newspaper as having been sought after by Professor Garrett Reed, an evil member of the Society of Explorers and Adventurers. However, this is likely referring to a different in-continuity idol due to this fight having transpired prior to Reed's death in 1931 and having had a different outcome.
Other connections[]
Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Forbidden Eye[]
This attraction is set right before the adventure where Indiana Jones sought after the idol. Several of the booby-traps in the Temple of the Forbidden Eye mirror those of the fertility-idol's temple.
Other appearances[]
Jock Lindsey's Hangar Bar[]
The idol is on one of the shelves in Jock Lindsey's Hangar Bar within the town of Disney Springs. It is also referenced in the flight-logs, a post-card to Jock from Indy, and a message from before Indy and Jock sought after it from an ally named Diego.
Trivia[]
- The idol's eyes look very close to human eyes due to an unused shot in the film where it would have moved its eyes.
