The Black rhino or African rhino is an animal from the Jungle Cruise.
History[]
Background[]
The African rhino is a species of black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis) inhabiting the African veldt along the Nile river in North Africa. Between roughly 1911 and 1936, a rhino chased the Lost Safari up a tree causing them to get stuck there. In 1938, the rhino chased the marooned crew of the Kwango Kate up a tree as-well. When the Jungle Navigation Company dumped Christmas decor over Adventureland as part of their, "Jingle Cruise", a fruit-cake was impaled on the rhino's smaller horn.
Development history[]
A family of rhinos appeared in the original, nature oriented incarnation of the Jungle Cruise. Namely consisting of a mother rhino and two infants. After boats scared the babies, the mother rhino threatened to attack the boats.[1] These rhino were replaced in 1977/1978 with the gorillas ransacking the base camp.
The rhino was designed by Marc Davis for a comedy-oriented refurbishment of the Jungle Cruise. In 2021, the American versions of the Jungle Cruise were refurbished to replace the safari with the passengers of the Kwango Kate.

Trivia[]
- During the 2021 refurbishments, the rhino was made to prod at a series of crates rather than any safari members.
- Accomplished, "imagineer" Joe Rohde (who headed the Jungle Cruise inspired attractions Kilimanjaro Safaris and Na'vi River Journey) made a joke on Twitter about the rhino being upset at the crates due to imagineering teams at the time over-using labelled crates for story-telling and easter-eggs. Incidentally, this refurbishment saw a large amount of crates and obscured post-cards integrated into the attraction for this purpose.
